Giving Fans a High-Speed Gameday Mobile Experience with Distributed Networks

Columbia is the capital city of South Carolina. The Williams-Brice Stadium is the home football stadium for the South Carolina Gamecocks, the college football team representing the University of South Carolina. The stadium has been the site of many concerts, state high school football championships, and various other events.

 M-Communications installed, integrated, and commissioned DAS upgrades in 2018 and a full DAS rip and replace in 2020. Our long-standing working relationship with a major Carrier and U of SC ensured we delivered our project on-time.

Scope of Work

In 2020, major Carrier selected M-Communications to rip and replace the CommScope ION-B with a CommScope ERA system. The project would be handled in two phases.

  • Phase 1 decommissioning of the 11 CommScope ION-B sectors; Install 27 new CommScope ERA sectors and complete construction of brand-new shelter to house the head-end located near the Stadium – HVAC, Fire Suppression, Transfer switch, outdoor generator pads. Completed September 2020

  • Phase 2 is replacement of remaining ION-B sectors with ERA system – 100 new ERA CommScope Remotes. Fusion splicing, PIM/Sweep tests, BTS integration services, DAS commissioning support, internal walk testing validaiton.

  • To be completed July 2021

In 2018 major Carrier selected M-Communications to support a project to increase the DAS sector count by 10 and to add 1 LTE carrier to increase bandwidth capacity to enhance the experience of fans in the stadium. This includes the addition of 2 new eNodeB sites, 10 new 700LTE radios, 10 1900 LTE radios and 34 AWS radios. Our intimate working relationship with major Carrier and the University ensured we delivered on-time.
